Choosing a Genre to Work With

It didn't take long for me and my group to come up with a film genre idea. We chose thriller because it's simply the easiest and most fun! With comedy, you have to really try and get the right actor, and writing comedy scripts can be extremely challenging. Whereas with thrillers, anyone can look scary in black clothes in the background with the lights off, and not even have to say anything! Plus we agreed we personally find it much more fun to create thrilling films.
In class, we all got together and added different pieces of information to a spider diagram on a selection of genres, and we thought up conventions, examples, pros and cons. With all the collected evidence in mind, we decided upon our final genre choice; thriller. My group and I came to the decision to add elements of horror into our thriller-based film, to give a more upbeat feel and increase tension. It also relates to us and our values, as we thought making a horror-like thriller film would be more interesting.

Below is a piece of embedded media containing the results we collected in class about genres.
